Telephone / radio, explained.
Telephone / radio narrows the frequency range by removing low bass and high treble. Sonic uses two high-pass and two low-pass filters to make the roll-offs stronger, leaving a middle band that resembles a small speaker or telephone.
Every parameter, explained
Low cutoff
100 Hz to 1000 Hz · Default 400 HzLow cutoff controls where the low-frequency roll-off starts, from 100 to 1000 Hz. Raising it removes more body and warmth.
High cutoff
1500 Hz to 6000 Hz · Default 2800 HzHigh cutoff controls the upper roll-off, from 1500 to 6000 Hz. Lowering it removes more brightness and consonant detail. The frequencies between the two settings remain most prominent.
A good place to start
The default 400–2800 Hz produces a narrow telephone-like tone. Try 150–5000 Hz for a wider radio character. Tune while listening to a clear spoken phrase or a vocal line.
What to listen for
Filtering removes real content from the source. A narrow range can make music thin and reduce intelligibility. This effect does not add static, tuning noise, distortion or a broadcast compressor.
Does this replicate a particular radio?
It recreates a narrow-band tonal character, rather than modeling a specific device or transmission system.
